Reticule: Handbag: Buckaroo Bobbins |
Reticules, also called indispensables, were bags gathered at the top with drawstring handles used to carry a few indispensable items such as money, handkerchief, smelling salts, pistol, etc. since ladies fashions of the late 1800's had no pockets. Dressy versions for special occasions were made with fabrics and trimmings to match their dresses. Reticules were also commonly used to carry needlework which one would take along on social calls. They became so popular by the turn of the century that they were used as containers for practically everything in the home from laundry and stocking bags to table centerpieces with candy bags. Our Reticule (Handbag) pattern has 3 versions with ideas for decorating as well as instructions for making tassels and beautiful ribbon roses.
