Hungarian Szur: Folkwear |
Hungarian Szur Worn by Magyar herdsmen in Hungary as far back as the Middle Ages, the Szur is a dramatic, mid-calf coat that was traditionally worn over the shoulders as a cape and lavishly decorated with cutwork felt applique. The square shapes of this garment make it an ideal canvas for other handwork techniques, as well as for handwoven fabrics. Pattern includes instructions for a traditional and contemporary version, applique decoration, and historical lore about the Magyar. One size for men and women Suggested Fabrics: Heavyweight fabrics such as wool, corduroy, or denim. This coat is traditionally made of felted wool with felt appliques. The applique felt should be somewhat heavier and stronger than ordinary craft felt. The square shapes of this garment also make it an ideal canvas for quilting, embroidery, and other embellishments.
