Yarn & Stitch: The Five Basic Yarn Types

The Craft Yarn Council advises that all yarn patterns require specific types of yarn. There are five basic types of yarn:

* Baby/Fingering
* Sport/Baby
* Worsted Weight
* Chunky
* Bulky

Each type of yarn has a different thickness or "weight" with fingering being the finest. The term "ply" frequently seen on labels refers to the number of strands that were twisted together to form the yarn. Yarn content or fiber content tells what the yarn is made of: synthetic yarns, such as acrylics, are easier to wash and can be worn by people sensitive to wool.

Working with Repeats

When repeats are part of a knitting pattern, write the number of repeats completed on a sticky note, and attach it to the instructions when you lay the project down. You will never have to recount yur stitches.

Knitting Basics: Knit Stitch

Get ready to knit in no time with the easy technique below.

With the yarn in back of the needles, insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from left to right. Bring the yarn between the needles from left to right. Bring the right needle with the loop of yarn toward you and through the stitch, slipping the old stitch off the left needle.

Blanket Stitch Tip

Here's a neat way to get that perfect finish to your fleece blankets. When doing a blanket stitch on the edges, use the perforated edges from your printer paper. You may have to pin it to the blanket for the 1st 12 - 18 inches just to get started but it really looks neat when finished. Saves on thread too.
